fawzi-al-odah-known-as-the-e2809cforever-prisonere2809dFawzi al Odah, known as the “forever prisoner,” has been freed from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay and sent to Kuwait.

Odah, 37, was held for nearly 13 years but never charged with a crime. His dangerousness was downgraded by a U.S. government parole board.

Out of 148 detainees remaining at the prison, 79, like Odah, have been approved for release with security assurances.

Odah’s release is the first since President Obama’s decision to transfer five Afghan Taliban prisoners to Qatar in exchange for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in August.

Odah was considered a member of al Qaeda by the U.S. military, and was captured in Pakistan in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Read more at the Miami Herald.
