novominsker-rebbeIn a memorable display of Kavod HaTorah, about 1,000 thousand Yidden from throughout the Baltimore Jewish community gathered on Friday night to welcome the Novominsker Rebbe, Rav Yaakov Perlow, Rosh Agudath Israel of America. The Rebbe was in town to help inaugurate Baltimore’s newest Mikdash Me’at, Merkaz Torah U’Tefilla, a new Shul under the auspices of his nephew, Rav Yissochor Dov Eichenstein. The overflow crowd spilled out from the tent specially erected for the Shabbos festivities, as prominent Rabanim from across the city graced the dais with the Rebbe. Rav Eichenstein, Rav Moshe Heinemann and Rav yaakov Hopfer all regaled the packed house with inspiring words of Torah. Attendees squeezed in closely eagerly straining to catch every word. The entire street resounded with the sounds of niggunim as the crowd sang together between inspiring words from Rabbonim and the Rebbe himself.

The theme of the night was unity in diversity, stressing the idea of numerous paths to serving the Creator. The Novominsker cited Rav Leible Eiger’s explanation in the name of his grandfather Rav Akiva Eiger of the concept of the righteous “encircling” Hashem, symbolizing their being equidistant from the center and commensurately equally beloved in their recognition of their Creator. He then explained the sanctity of Shabbos as being a respite from the “Mitzrayim” that is the week of the working Jew.

For many in the audience it was their first experience at a tish, and they walked away inspired and enthused. The evening promised to add a new and exciting dimension to the patina of Baltimore’s already vibrant Orthodox community as it continues its geometric and spiritual growth.

  1. Unity is obvioulsy a wonderful goal and I’m happy that Rabbi Perlow made this the theme of the evening. I’m proud to call him my Rebbe. (He was my Yeshiva high school 12th grade Rebbe in Skokie.)

  2. “Rav Eichenstein, Rav Moshe Heinemann and Rav yaakov Hopfer all regaled the packed house with inspiring words of Torah. Attendees squeezed in closely eagerly straining to catch every word.”

Can you please, PLEASE tone down the over-the-top tone that is so standard in charedi writing? “Regaled,” “squeezed in closely, eagerly straining..” YUCH. STOP IT. It’s impossible to read this stuff without gagging, so nauseating is it in its obsequiousness.

“The entire street resounded with the sounds of niggunim as the crowd sang together between inspiring words from Rabbonim and the Rebbe himself.” It’s just too much, the fawning tone, the worshipful, slavish detail.

  3. shmuel, what’s your problem? So the writer may have used some over glorifying sentences, this is a big thing for Baltimore, and you go ahead and yake it away from them, get a life.

  4. I walked half an hour each way to attend this historical event. It was a beautiful Kiddush Hashem. Indeed, I did strain to catch every word!
