UTJ MKs have proposed enlarging the Knesset from its present 120 members to 140.

“The 120 figure for MKs was established seventy years ago at the founding of Israel,” their proposal argued. “Since then, it’s become clear that the workload for MKs is constantly increasing. The Knesset has set up additional permanent committees and many temporary committees. MKs are members of numerous committees and do not manage to properly execute their parliamentary work.”

The proposal noted that Austria and Belgium, whose populations are similar to Israel, have 183 and 150 parliamentarians respectively. Even Denmark, with only 5.5 million residents, has 179. Proposals to enlarge the Knesset were rejected in 2006 and 2012.
