Israeli Finance Minister Moshe Kachlon plans to solve Israel’s housing crisis by building 2.6 million new homes by 2040, to be achieved by constructing tens-of-thousands of apartments yearly.

Aryeh Deri announced a plan to build 9,356 new chareidi homes in the Shapir region near Kiryat Gat in central Israel and said that potential exists to build many more. The apartments will be sold at reduced prices as part of Israel’s Mechir Lemishtaken project, which provides subsidized homes to the economically disadvantaged.

“This is great news for the chareidi community, which is suffering from a severe housing shortage,” Deri said. “Besiyata dishmaya we have launched the significant number of ten thousand housing units in the center of the country. This will provide a partial but important solution to the dilemma.”
