Nearly 5,000 flights have been delayed and another 1,149 are canceled as Tropical Storm Arthur descends upon the East Coast. It’s now expected to be a Category 2 hurricane with its maximum winds hitting 90 mph, with the big danger being the rip currents it will generate after passing.
As of 7 p.m. EST, the storm was moving inland from 35 miles off Cape Fear, North Carolina, with a hurricane warning issued across most of the state.
“This is not a landfall-problem hurricane. This is a rip-current-problem hurricane,” said CNN meteorologist Chad Myers. For example, when Hurricane Bertha was 1,000 miles from the shore in New Jersey and Maryland, its back-flowing water caused 1,500 lifeguard rescues in one week in Ocean City.
