About 8 million tons of plastic waste was dumped into oceans in 2010 by coastal communities, according to a new report published in Science. The new figure means there is 10 to 30 times the amount of debris than surveys previously estimated.
Even more alarming, the amount of plastic waste is projected to rise tenfold by 2025 if no efforts are made to curb the dumping.
China was the worst offender, dumping as much as 3.53 million tons of plastic into the ocean five years ago. Read more at The Guardian.
