To restore quiet to the streets of the chareidi town of Elad, its municipality sent out notices ordering most businesses to close by 9:00 p.m. Supermarkets may operate until midnight, seforim shops may remain open until 10:30, and all other shops were to close at 9:00 except on Thursdays, when they could remain open until 10:00.
“The mayor [Yisroel Porush] wants to turn Elad into a ghost town that goes to sleep at 9:00,” an Elad resident complained. “It is ridiculous that a person who wants to buy a pizza after 9:00 in the evening will need to travel to Bnei Brak. There is no precedent for this anywhere and we are not willing to suffer because of a crazy idea of the mayor.”
“If the mayor wants to fight against neshirah (bochurim going off the derech] in Elad, we shouldn’t need to suffer because of it,” said another resident. “Let him find other solutions.”
