world-trade-center-freedom-tower-9-11There is no price to steep to memorialize the heroes of September 11.

But most people don’t realize just how expensive the memorial – with its huge reflecting pools, ringed by waterfalls and skyscrapers, and a cavernous underground museum still under construction – will cost.

The National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center inspired some 4.5 million visitors in its first year.

But the  foundation that runs the memorial estimates that once the roughly $700 million project is complete, it will cost $60 million a year to operate.

A steep price, indeed.

The associated press reports that, by comparison, the National Park Service budgeted $8.4 million this year to operate and maintain Gettysburg National Military Park and $3.6 million for the monument that includes the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Running Arlington National Cemetery, which has more than 14,000 graves and receives 4 million visitors a year, costs $45 million annually.

At the 9/11 memorial, $12 million per year, of the $60 million budget, will be spent on private security because of terrorism fears.

Just the  two massive fountains that mark the spots where the twin towers once stood will cost $4.5 million to $5 million annually.

An admission price hasn’t been set. If the museum gets the 2 million visitors a year the foundation expects, a $12 fee will cover 40 percent of the operating costs.

  1. when will obama & america -including us as parents- start spending money wisely? especially in todays hard trying times as the economy gets worse & worse. no matter how many trillions america is in dept they will still spend billions more on foolish & totally unnecessary things.

and the same applies to the people of todays generation, no matter how poor we are, we stilll need to spend so much money on the fanciect weddings, technology & cars etc…
is this what people want for themselves? a life of stress & dept ahead of them? why don’t we start to spend wise & get onlt whats necessary so you will then have backup when you honestly need the money (a weeding or a mortgage) i.e. why don’t we think about the future instead of just thinking about NOW & ONLy NOW? then when a big expense comes up, we need to use credit cards & mortgages filled with interest & stress

I wish everyone Hatzlacha & hope you will start to think about the future. & not just about now.
