Here’s a great opportunity for you to learn about a fascinating cultural microcosm in New York! On Sunday, October 18th, there will be a tour of the Hasidic Jewish community living in Williamsburg, in Brooklyn. The residents of this community, known as the Satmars, came from Eastern Europe after World War II and have been in Williamsburg ever since. Some 30,000 strong, the Satmars have their own schools, synagogues, and social network. The Satmar community is interesting not only as a cultural unit, but as an important voting bloc in New York politics.
