lakewood-tent-cityLakewood/Toms River, NJ – An agreement was reached today between members of a homeless camp in Lakewood and township officials that will eventually close the camp and find homes for everyone who lived there.

The agreement ends a two-year-old legal battle, which began with an eviction notice served by township officials on members of the Cedar Bridge Avenue encampment. The lawsuit was resolved today with the help of the nonprofit organization Solutions To End Poverty Soon. The group will help place the 80-plus members of the camp into housing and other appropriate facilities.

Still to be resolved is the lawsuit involving camp members and the Ocean County Board of Freeholders and the county Board of Social Services, which was scheduled for trial in August.

The consent agreement between the township and camp members will be certified in court May 3 in Toms River. Details of the agreement were not released.

The courtroom was packed with advocates for the homeless as well as Lakewood residents of the communities near the camp.
