agudath-israel-emblemAgudas Yisroel of America statement:

We are deeply dismayed by the Knesset’s vote approving the compulsory conscription of charedim into military or national service.

While the proposed new legislation will not become law unless it passes second and third readings in the Knesset, the preliminary approval of the measure portends an ominous eventual outcome.

The proposed new law is unprecedented. It would undo a policy that has been in place for the 65 years of Israel’s existence, under which yeshiva students have been exempt from the military draft. This policy reflected a broad consensus that Torah scholars are indispensable to the wellbeing of Israel and the survival of the Jewish People as a Jewish People.

If the proposed new law is enacted, the inevitable outcome will be that many thousands of budding Torah scholars will be torn from the halls of Jewish learning, and forcibly exposed to a secular culture that is totally foreign to their most basic values.

The Knesset has embarked on a path that leads in dangerous directions. We decry this action, and urgently implore Israel’s lawmakers to turn back before it is too late.

  1. Would Rabbi Moshe Sherer zt”l have chained himself to the knesset podium or cut his garment as an act of mourning? Do actions like those of the chareidi representatives in any way convince anyone of anything? Isn’t it better to negotiate a compromise than to declare war, especially since the law can and will be changed before it is ever enforced. I do not think one boy will go to jail and that is not even the real issue. Anyone can choose civil service like workign for ZAKA if they don’t want to enter Nachal Chareidi. Why the confrontational approach, can it work?

  2. THE CAUSE OF THIS IS BECAUSE THERE IS NO ACHDUS AMONG THE FRUM PARTIES IN THE KNESSET .STOP AND THINK FOR A SECOND ,HAD ALL THE FRUM PARTIES GOT TOGETHER BEFORE THE LAST ELECTION AND SET ASIDE ALL THEIR DIFFRENCES FOR THE SAKE OF HASHEM .THE FRUM PARTIES WOULD HAVE TODAY IN THE KNESSET ANYWHERE BETWEEN 24 TO 28 MEMBERS . I GUESS WE HAVE NOT LEARNED FROM THE CAUSE OF THE CHURBAN OF THE SECOND BEIS HAMIGDASH.MAY HASHEM HAVE MERCY ON ALL OF US.

  3. The implementation , 65 years ago, of army deferments for Bnai Torah was a chesed from a government, most of whom didn’t have any respect or felt any chashivus for Torah.
A nais , considering that many of these government officials were doing their best to rip any semblance of Torah from wherever and whoever they could.

  4. I don’t get it. If you are a citizen of a country it is an honor and a duty to serve in the Army. If they don’t serve then who will protect the Jews that live in Israel from utter inhalation of the enemies that surround it. Baruch Hashem now days we can fulfill the mitzvah of living in Israel. We must protect it. To be mikayin Yishuv Eretz Yisroel in galus is no small feat, we must protect it.
