Agudath Israel of America New Jersey office welcomed with great appreciation the announcement by Senator Bob Menendez that he opposes the proposed Iranian nuclear deal, and intends to vote to disapprove the deal.
Senator Menendez has spoken out consistently and forcefully over the past several years about the grave threat a nuclear empowered Iran would pose to America and its allies, especially Israel.
Yet while Senator Menendez’s position is not surprising, it is courageous. He is only the second Senator of his political party to publicly announce that he will be voting against the position of the Administration and there was much pressure for him not to buck the leadership of his party. Fortunately, however, as he said today during his public announcement at Seton Hall University “I have looked into my own soul and my devotion to principle may once again lead me to an unpopular course, but if Iran is to acquire a nuclear bomb, it will not have my name on it.” For this he deserves our deep appreciation.
