In a statement posted online, the militant group Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which is based in Yemen, took responsibility for last week’s attack on the French magazine Charlie Hebdo. It claimed it was behind “this operation as a vengeance for the messenger of Allah… chose the target, laid the plan, and financed the operation.”

It posted the statement with an image of the Eiffel Tower dissolving. The statement called two of the gunmen, Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, “heroes of Islam.” Read more at The New York Times.
