Al-Sisi Wins Egypt’s Presidency

general-abdul-fattah-el-sisiLong expected to become Egypt’s president, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi grabbed a victory in today’s elections. The man who overthrew Egypt’s first freely elected leader, President Mohamed Mursi, won with 92.2 percent of the vote. His only rival, leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi, won 3.8 percent, and 4.2 percent of the votes were declared void.

Despite this landslide, the overall voter turnout was lower than anticipated. 44.4 percent of eligible Egyptian voters went to the poll, a far cry from the 80 percent al-Sisi called for last week. The low turnout suggests that Egyptians may not have as much faith in al-Sisi as his supporters claim. Read more.

  1. I hope he’s not the sisi his name portends! Hopefully he’ll take the necessary bold steps to maintain reasonable peaceful relationship with Israel and move his country into a 21st century nation. He can do what Mayor de-B wanted to do and ban donkeys from the streets.
