als-ice-bucket-challengeThe viral ALS ice bucket challenge, which has prompted dozens of celebrities (and at least one former president) to dump buckets of ice water over their heads, has apparently done more than spice up your Twitter and Instagram feeds. More than $41.8 million have been raised for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s disease, as a result of the viral challenge. The money came in from over 739,000 new donors, who together donated more than double what the ALS Association received in the year that ended Jan. 31, 2013, according to the nonprofit’s IRS filing.

“While the monetary contributions are so absolutely incredible, and we’ll be able to really make a considerable difference in moving the mission of the ALS Association forward, the real fortunate part of the Ice Bucket Challenge is the amount of awareness it has raised for the A.L.S. cause in general,” ALS Association spokeswoman Carrie Munk said. “It puts us in a whole different ballgame to find treatments and cures for this disease.” Read more at The New York Times.

  1. There is an excellent organization that specializes in opposing abortion and actually saves babies from (where their parents had) planned (to have) abortions; it is called “Online For Life.”

In a blog at their web site at http://onlineforlife.org/blog/the-truth-behind-the-als-ice-bucket-challenge/ (see the full article there), they point out that the ALS Association does support the research (for ALS) option of doing research on embryos, commonly called: “Embryonic Stem Cell Research.” Now, the process of taking cells out of an embryo to do research on them KILLS THE EMBRYO. So embryonic stem cell research IS a full act of abortion!

Now, it is well known that opposition to doing this type of research is a severely contentious issue, because “for years we’ve been told that the use of embryonic stem cells, which destroy human embryos — that is, people — will lead to miracle cures for all kinds of diseases and conditions.” The truth though is that with the many years that this embryonic stem cell research has been going on, with countless millions of dollars being poured into it, NOT EVEN ONE ILLNESS CURE HAS BEEN DISCOVERED! (See full discussion of this point at http://www.lifesitenews.com/opinion/embryonic-stem-cells-arent-working-but-government-gives-more-funding-anyway.)

Furthermore, “even if there had been progress in the research using embryonic stem cells, here at Online for Life we’d argue that the killing of one human being to improve the medical prognosis of another human being is a morally indefensible position.”

They empathetically state that, of course, research into discovering a cure for ALS (and any disease) is most certainly a most noble endeavor. However, it cannot be done at the expense of other people’s lives.

Therefore, people need to petition the ALS Association to totally stop its embryonic program.

  2. can someone explain to me why you can’t donate without a bucket of ice over your head?..whoever is familiar with that disease knows the devastation it can cause…

Yes, efforts to do research to find a cure for ALS (and any disease) is most certainly a most noble endeavor. Therefore, it is most certainly a most notable endeavor to point out that in the realm of the natural medical fields, there are numerous (natural) medicines and treatments that, Im Yirtza Hashem, can be extremely helpful in preventing and slowing down and even sometimes reversing the ALS disease.
