America Pays Tribute To Its Military Heroes On Memorial Day

memorial-dayEvents are planned across the United States to honor the nation’s service men and women on Memorial Day today.

Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died.

Today, Americans remember all the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

In New York, dozens of people, including war veterans and local elected officials, are expected to attend the annual salute to heroes at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. During the ceremony, U.S. Navy Sailors, Members of the Intrepid Former Crew Members Association and veterans from around the Tri-State area will unfurl at 100-foot American Flag. The event will also include a traditional wreath laying into the Hudson River, the playing of Taps and a 3-volley rifle salute.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to speak at a wreath-laying ceremony at the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument at West 89th Street and River Side Drive at 10:30 a.m. before marching in two parades in Queens.

In New Jersey, hundreds are expected to attend an 11 a.m. ceremony at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial.

President Barack Obama was expected to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery across the Potomac River from Washington.
