shalit2Major General (res.) Amos Gilad, Director of Policy and Political-Military Affairs at the Israel Ministry of Defense, made a brief trip Thursday to Cairo to meet with Egyptian officials.

Israeli security officials confirmed Gilad was in Cairo where he was expected to meet with senior Egyptian officials to discuss, among other things, “the Schalit deal.” Observers have speculated Gilad Schalit, who has been held captive by Hamas since 2004, will be traded for several Fatah and Hamas terrorists with blood on their hands.

Israeli officials did not address the details of the Gilad’s itinerary but said “all that applies to Egypt will be discussed.”

It is believed Gilad will raise Egypt’s decision to open the Rafiah crossing, souring Israel-Egypt relations, and Israel’s position on goods traveling through Rafiah in light of Hamas’ inclusion in the PA.

Although not directly related to the Schalit talks, Israel recently expressed hope that Egyptian involvement with the Palestinian Authority will bring pressure to bear on Hamas following its incorporation into the PA.

This is not Gilad’s first trip to Cairo. He is a favorite for such trips due to the good relations he has developed with Egyptian security officials.

  1. Why did you stop including “ben Aviva” in your articles about Gilad ben Aviva Shalit? Seeing those extra two words will encourage people to say Tehillim. We have no idea what such spontaneous outpourings accomplish, even if we haven’t seen immediate results.
