Amtrak has settled lawsuits stemming from a May 2015 derailment for $265 million. The derailment occurred outside Philadelphia and killed eight passengers, injuring dozens of others. “The settlement program is a fair, uniform, and efficient method to compensate those that lost loved ones as well as the more than 200 injured survivors, many seriously injured,” said Thomas R. Kline, one of the lawyers representing the passengers who sued Amtrak.

Kline and his colleagues are confident that the payments will be made by next summer. Due to the severity of this specific incident, the federal cap for train accidents was raised from $200 million to $295 million. Read more at CBS PHILLY.
