The former congressman and New York City Democratic mayoral hopeful has vaulted to the front of the pack, leading former frontrunner Christine Quinn in the race to replace Mike Bloomberg, a new poll shows.

The NBC 4 New York/Wall Street Journal poll, conducted by Marist College, shows Weiner at 25 percent versus 20 percent for Quinn, the City Council Speaker vying to become the first woman and first openly gay mayor.

Last month, Quinn was ahead in the survey by five points.

Weiner is edging up with voters who say they would back him, and those who oppose him has decreased.

Bill Thompson, the 2009 Democratic nominee, trails at 13 percent, a slight rise but still behind the frontrunners. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, whose base of support Weiner cuts into, was at 10 percent, two points lower.

City Comptroller John Liu is at 8 percent. Two other hopefuls, novice pol Erick Salgado and former City Councilman Sal Albanese, are at 2 percent and 1 percent, respectively.

  1. This feels like a very sanitized story. What makes this a compelling headline is behavior that made Mr. Wiener quit which is not alluded to in any way in this article. I mention this because I often shudder at the kinds of “lack of derech eretz” comments that get posted on this site while Wiener’s behavior gets no mention. I’m not saying to be explicit about what got him in trouble, but something? V’ha’ikar chaser min hasefer as they say….
