steve-jobsApple announced tonight that co-founder and chairman Steve Jobs, the Silicon Valley legend who returned to engineer the company’s dramatic turnaround, has died.

Apple said it was “deeply saddened” by Jobs’ death. The company posted a statement on its Web site and offered an e-mail address ([email protected]) for messages of condolence. View Apple statement here

“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius and the world has lost an amazing human being,” the company said. “Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

Jobs, 56, who has been ailing for years, stepped down as CEO on Aug. 24.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know,” Jobs said in a statement then. “Unfortunately, that day has come.”

Jobs, whose company revolutionized the computer industry with products such as the Macintosh and later became a retail titan with its iPod and iconic stores, was one of the world’s best-known CEOs and has enjoyed perhaps the greatest second act in corporate history since returning to the company he co-founded.

When Jobs stepped down in August, Tim Cook took over as CEO, and yesterday unveiled Apple’s latest iPhone, the 4S, to mixed reviews. Cook previously served as CEO in 2004, while Jobs was treated for pancreatic cancer, and in 2009, when Jobs had a liver transplant.

Jobs, who co-founded the company at the age of 21, was ousted by the board in 1985. When he returned 12 years later, Apple had run up $1.86 billion in losses over two years. It was 90 days away from bankruptcy, Jobs would later say.

Since then, Jobs led Apple’s transformation into a seller of everything from smartphones to music. He engineered the Cupertino, Calif.-based company’s comeback by honing Apple’s industrial design, tightly integrating software and hardware, and pushing into new markets.

The iPhone, introduced in 2007, has become Apple’s best-selling product and turned the company into the world’s biggest smartphone maker.

  1. All of a persons wealth & honor, won’t keep him from going to the grave. You can’t buy your health (although we know that Tzedaka Tatzel Memoves).

  2. Prayers for the visionary Steve Jobs who passed away earlier today. His conceptions have brought a great deal of freedom and joy to many people. Take any decent current mobile handset back a hundred years ago, with time travel wireless connection of course, and people would think you were a witch, alien or charlatan.

  3. to comment number 3- I think that Mr. Jobs would prefer to see someone type ilived on his passing.
To comment number 5- perhaps you do not think that G-d had a hand in Mr. Jobs creations and you do not think that he is pertinent to the world at large and of course the lives of billions of jews now and in the future. G-d made Steve Jobs and the world is a truly better and more industrious place today. Be glad that our people are so fortunate.

  4. Many people use his products (i.e. iPhone and iPad) to learn Torah and serve Hashem with. He must have some merit because of this.
There is a new product on the market for iPhone, iPad and other smart phones and tablets that is a tremendous aid to limud haTorah (see here – http://www.powersefer.com)

  5. I have Tehillim, Selichos, and my Siddur on my iphone. I use it almost every day in that way.

G-d plays a vital roll in every day life, of every human being in the world. Steve Jobs was a human being, and G-d had a hand in Mr.Jobs being the innovator that he was.

BTW #7, Steve Jobs did not create the smart phone. The iphone has only been out since 2007. We’ve had smart phones since 2004 (at least). Not only that, but peole have to be responsible for their own actions. Mr.Jobs did not force anyone to play with their iphone in lieu of Talmud study.

    BDH

  6. #8 it MIGHT be that he has a zchus for creating the iphone (pod, pad..), but not sure (that wasn’t his kavvonah.

The message before yom kippur is straight: Money means nothing, surrounders will enjoy from the money you have left. Learn torah, that’s gonna go with you FOR EVER.

  7. All the comments look so funny, it sounds almost like a session of a hevenly cort, when they decide if Steve Jobs has more merids or sins 🙂
