A police officer in Wichita, Kansas, fatally shot a man while responding to an emergency call that authorities now say was a tragic and senseless prank.

The 28-year-old man, whom officials did not immediately identify, was killed around 6:20 p.m. Thursday after police responded to a report that there had been a shooting and hostages taken at the house, Deputy Wichita Police Chief Troy Livingston said at a Friday news conference.

“Due to the actions of a prankster, we have an innocent victim,” Livingston said, calling it a case of “swatting.”

Tyler Barriss, 25, was arrested on Friday in connection with the case, Los Angeles police told The Washington Post.

  1. Okay, so they caught some kid. Very nice. How does that exonerate the rogue police officer that murdered the innocent man? The Police Chief should resign in disgrace.

  2. The cops got a call that some guy with a gun shot someone and was threatening to shoot more people. They show up, and they see a guy who they think is reaching for a gun. What do you think they should do? Wait to see if he has a gun? Wait until he shoots one of them so that they can be sure? As much as you call them “rogue cops” and “trigger happy pigs” you wouldn’t hesitate for a second to call them if you were in danger.

    • That’s right: make sure there is an actual imminent threat before killing a person – that’s the standard that you would be held up to, cops should not be “more equal” on the Animal Farm. These SWAT cops are supposed professionals and they should be aware that not all calls are true, and just because there was a call doesn’t mean they should be killing anyone for the crime of not getting on their knees and raising their hands fast enough. Besides, claiming that a victim looked like going for the weapon, and that means just absent-mindedly holding up your pants or jacket, is a favorite manufactured excuse after the itchy-trigger-finger shot somebody.

    • You just keep defending these lowlife cops until they do something to YOU. Then, maybe, just maybe, you’ll wake up and realize all the years you were kissing up to them was worth squat.
