Aryeh Deri: “Rav Shach Returned the Pride of the Sefardim”

deri[Audio below.] In advance of the yahrtzeit of Maran Rav Elazar Menachem Man Shach zt”l yesterday, former Shas chairman Aryeh Deri gave a fascinating interview on Radio Kol Berama, during which described the first period following the establishment of the Shas party.

Deri recalled that at that time, Chacham Ovadiah Yosef met with Rav Shach and “this gave pride to the Sefardi world.” Until then, he said, “the Sefardim felt like second-class citizens. But then, suddenly, their representatives, in collaboration with Rav Shach, were working on behalf of greater chareidi Jewry.

“This gave avreichim a cheishek in their learning,” he said, and this is all a tribute to Rav Shach.

Deri said that had he had the opportunity at that time, he would have arranged additional meetings between the gedolei Torah.

  1. If this is indeed his feelings , then why was there such a rift and perhaps a slight in the Kavod of Maran Harav Shach ZY”A. Why didn’t Deri then realize that Maran gave them their pride and that besides for all other Torah perspectives they should have lisstened to Maran and not publicly defy him. Aryeh apologized before going to Massiyahu but that still bothers me tremendously. Any insight?
