deriFormer Knesset Member Aryeh Deri said today that the governing system in Israel must be changed and that chareidi parties should be dismantled. He reiterated his previous announcement of returning to public life, but noted he did not yet know in which capacity.

The former MK also slammed “a radical minority within the chareidi sector which sullies the reputation of the entire group.”

Deri participated in a conference on the rift between the chareidi public and the secular society at the Ono Academic College’s chareidi campus in Or Yehuda. The event was also attended by Opposition Chairwoman Tizpi Livni and journalist Sever Plocker.

“I am in favor of changing the election system. I want direct voting for the role of prime minister, similar to the method employed in the Unites States,” Deri said.

deri“I am in favor of canceling the chareidi parties, and for regional elections with the president or prime minister appointing professional and not political ministers,” Deri told the chareidi students. The former Shas chairman noted, “Under the current system, the minority has no other way to protect itself.”

Deri also slammed groups within the chareidi sector who he said were damaging the seculars’ perception of the chareidi public.

“Unfortunately, as chareidim we must perform serious self-examination. Our image in the secular public is one of cart burners, stone throwers and blackmailers.”

He further added, “This is the only connection secular have with chareidim, but it’s not the truth. Approximately 99% of the chareidi public does not approve of such things.”

Referring to the “problematic” minority within chareidi society, the former Shas chairman said, “I won’t go into details so my car won’t get torched tomorrow morning. This minority isn’t even a minority, it’s one thousandth of the sector, which is taking over.”

  1. What does he mean by dismantle all Chareidi parties? Surely he does not want just secular parties? Am I missing something?

  2. why would he want the chariedy parties to be dismantled? What have they done wrong? Isnt he chariey too? Sorry guys i just don’t get it. seriously. under one hand he says he wants the minority to be protected on the other he says he wants them not to have any power. Whats going on?

  3. Deri … we love you!
Come back quickly – we need a competent frum politician in the Knesset. He’s right about getting rid of the children’s act in Gimel.

  4. The ‘charedi’ parties are not following the mandates given them by the Chazon Ish at the time. And times have changed. It was once ossur to vote, now it is a chiyuv. I agree a serious revamping needs to take place. Also a very small group that grabs attention can make an entire sector seem crazy.

  5. Would be normal for him to be bitter and resentful. After all he made Shas, and now he is marginalized. I wonder why he thought of this now and not thirteen years ago when he was a minister under RABIN?!
Did he ask his Mentor Rav Ovadia Sheyichyeh for guidance on this issue?

  6. Could somebody explain why in the US there are no Chareidi parties yet the Agudath Israel of America (which isn’t a Chareidi party) is very effective in lobbying for issues affecting Yidden.

And they are very well-regarded, as well.
Contrast that with the UTJ party in Israel.

  7. Actually, EVER having Religious parties in the Knesset to begin with was a terrible move. The bickering and cheapening of religion via trading favors and quid pro quo votes has done NOTHING to endear yiddishkeit to the masses of non-frum Israelis. Aderaba! They have over the years lost all respect for the Tora and our values by watching the pettiness perpetrated by the religious parties in the knesset.

Anyone who looks at this with his shtei einayim OPEN, will realize the truth in what Deri says.

However, NOW, once the dammage has already been done, it will be very hard to change. Miuvos lo yuchal lisken.

  8. Actually, what he is saying is not so crazy at all, and some very wise (religiuos) people have advocated the same thing before. R’ Berel Wein has said that the religious community in Israel would be much more effective in influencing the political process for good in the role of constituents of the major parties rather than as cynical political horse traders.

  9. “I am in favor of changing the election system. I want direct voting for the role of prime minister, similar to the method employed in the Unites States,” Deri said.

It’s about time. It’s long overdue to terminate the dysfunctional Israeli system, which allows career politicians to sit at the trough of the Israeli taxpayer and be completely unaccountable to him/her.

“I am in favor of canceling the chareidi parties, and for regional elections with the president or prime minister appointing professional and not political ministers,” Deri told the chareidi students. The former Shas chairman noted, “Under the current system, the minority has no other way to protect itself.”

I’m no fan of the selfish, short-sighted and sometimes laughable horse-trading that goes on in their politics, and maybe he realizes that charedim are getting a very bad rap in that arena, too, seeing as how they’ll team up with anyone as long as they get their needed welfare funding, but the reporter should have probed further. Agree with commenter above, and even if he changes their system, how will charedim have their political interests protected? Unless he feels they have no rights and ought not be protected.

“Unfortunately, as chareidim we must perform serious self-examination. Our image in the secular public is one of cart burners, stone throwers and blackmailers.”

Truer words were never uttered in public in Israel before.

  10. I think he’s trying to say that the current system is corrupt, with politicans that have no professional experience in many fields are employed and very often their only motivation is to bash the frum and as a result gain credit in the media which then pushes them to higher office, an example of this is education minister gidon sar, and tomi lapid and now his son yair lapid

  11. sorry boys and girls, but trading is part and parcel in any parliamentary system. just that the press only likes to bash the charedim for it.

  12. “Our image in the secular public is one of cart burners, stone throwers and blackmailers.”

Why repeat the Liberal anti Torah view? Mr. Deri, you had your chance. You were railroaded. You’ve been a good citizen. Stay out of politics & stay out of trouble.

  13. To all those criticizing Chareidi parties – it’s sad to see you acting just like the left wing in Israel when they cave in and agree with hateful propaganda motivated by anti-semitism. The secular establishment and media acts similar to the anti-semites and bashes the Chareidim (as has always been the case in history). Then they find supporters within Chareidi jewry who are sick of being bashed around so they take the side of the bashers. Even Deri was clearly not referring to the regular establishment which is included in the 99% that are against any chilul-hashem activity that he mentions. Stop the self-hating as you are acting just like the leftists that you can’t stand. The question is What did Deri mean? I don’t think he shares the hateful comments above. The welfare that the parties fight for maintains minimal Torah study in Eretz Yisroel. Every party has the right to fight for what is important to it. The secular get enormous funding for secular pursuits.

  14. ““Unfortunately, as chareidim we must perform serious self-examination. Our image in the secular public is one of cart burners, stone throwers and blackmailers.”

Truer words were never uttered in public in Israel before.”

If you read the rest of what he is quoted saying, then the frei public attributing the (possible) misdeeds of a tiny minority of a tiny minority to all frum Yidden means we the frum Yidden are noit the ones who need introspection.

BTW there are no charedi parties in Israel, by definition. Same definition applies to “religious Zionist” that’s kind of like a religious apikores. Use some sechel, people!
