Aryeh Deri Formally Hands in Resignation to the Knesset

Shas chairman Aryeh Deri formally submitted his letter of resignation tonight, at about 7:30 p.m., to Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein.

The resignation came following the release of video recordings of Rav Ovadia Yosef zt”l.

Deri gave in his resignation last night to the Moeztet Chachmei Hatorah of Shas. The Moetzet rejected the resignation and asked him to stay on. Today, he officially resigned.

Among those who have asked him to stay on is Baba Boruch Abuchatzeira, who, in a letter, wrote “I turn to you in an emotional plea from me and all rabbis of our holy family, to strengthen your hands and activities in all holy public activities, and don’t turn to the misdeeds and acts of the arrogant people, we stand at your right to strengthen your spirit so you do not fall,” wrote the rabbi.. As is known, you merited to stand at the head of the mission of the rabbi for the Torah of Israel and the nation of Israel to found Torah establishments, Talmud Torahs, yeshivot and seminaries and mikvaot in every site in the Holy Land for dozens of years. You don’t need to consider the publications.”

While some are speculating that the Deri resignation is a political ploy, insiders say that the truth is otherwise, and, in fact, Deri is quite serious about not returning to the Knesset in the upcoming elections, as he feels deeply hurt and betrayed, feelings he has revealed to those close to him.

  1. Please explain how you resign from something which does not exist? The Knesset is dissolved and elections are coming up? What exactly did Deri resign from? I am confused (but not fooled)
