abbasIsrael recently transferred 200 million shekels ($52 million) in tax payments to the Palestinian Authority, despite threatening not to do so over PA President Mahmoud Abbas’ insistence on seeking the status of a nonmember observer state in the U.N. General Assembly, according to a report by Army Radio on Thursday.

The payment was reportedly made despite Israel’s threat to freeze the tax money that is collected by Israeli authorities and transferred to the authority to provide the salaries of senior Palestinian officials.

Foreign Ministry officials, headed by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, declared two weeks ago that a Palestinian bid in the U.N. could lead to a termination of tax money transfers to the authority, which could in effect cause the authority to collapse.

According to Army Radio, Israel has decided to react to the Palestinian bid moderately, and the only threat being used at this point is the withholding of tax payments, which are routinely handled by the Finance Ministry. However, Israel apparently decided not to go through with the threat and handed over the 200 million shekels ($52 million) for last month’s tax collection.

Army Radio quoted Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz as saying that Israel would respond in due time to the unilateral Palestinian move.

“If the Palestinian Authority thinks it will attack us in the U.N. in this extreme way and continue to benefit from our practical cooperation, I think it will be surprised,” Steinitz reportedly said.

  1. If the UN wants to recognize the PA as as state, fine.Let them stand on there own two feet and stop taking money from everyone. Here in the USA we can use the money we give them for the people that pay taxes here we have enough of our own that can use the money. Let the countries that voted for this give them and let the USA stop giving. Let The USA say we will not let any PA in our country because we have no trust in them. All the countries that voted for them let them invite them to there country and hopefully they won’t do any terrorist attack on them like did here in the USA.

  2. These are taxes collected by Israel for the local government. We didn’t withhold the money that was theirs. This isn’t “astounding”.

  3. To understand what Israel is doing is very simple what is the only thing us Jews want, peace hence bibi is giving money to the only person who can control this perah adam because abbas although he has zero control in Gaza does have control of the west bank which is even more important to keep them in check and thus any way to keep the peace for aslong as possible is worth while even if its not sustainable being that the abershter runs the world and we must have bethuchin what will be later bec no solution is really an end game for israels enemies in the middle east so if we can buy peace like we have done for the last few years from the west bank its worthwhile bec we never kno what realities on the ground might change to help us later

  4. Astounding? Israel PAYS and delivers water, electricity and cellular telephone servive to Gaza for FREE. All they have to do to stop all the bombs being shot at Israel is to top the water, electricity, and cel phones. The Gaza Arabs would stop shooting missiles in a second. But will the smart brave Israelis do so? Read the headlines and decide for yourself.

  5. The Czech vote was interesting. Why do many Czechs empathise with Israel ?

The Czech capital Prague is very beautiful. It is proof that the Czech people throughout the ages have been motivated to defend, improve and preserve their little corner of Planet Earth. They have retained their language, art, culture, holidays and traditions yet have evolved into a modern, independent state. They have a commitment and loyalty to the territory that G-d led them to live in. But even the most secular of Czechs of today, and the nation is consistently voted the least “religious” in Europe, must understand that if they do not do good deeds and act well they and their land will suffer. (Quite a spiritual concept, yes ?)

The 195 nations and the other zones/regions of the world are like pieces of a vast, interesting, complex jigsaw puzzle. The word “nation” is mentioned over 300 times in the Tanach, so the concept of a nation state seems divinely mandated. For the Holy Land and environs people should think of the following co-operative configuration/paradigm…

    The Temple Mount/Noble Sanctuary
    The Old City
    Judea and Samaria/The West Bank
    The State of Israel
    Gaza
Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia.

Like a constitutional monarchy with provinces/nations…

    Shabbat Shalom !

  7. I don’t get it. The Palestinians pay taxes to Israel. Then they get the money back to cover their community expenses. The money belongs to the Palestinians in the first place. What if they just stop paying taxes? Will Israel enforce the tax arrangement with military actions? There is something illogical about this. Let the Israeli government leave the tax money in the West Bank in the first place.
