The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is allegedly looking to “beef up” its federal presence in Chicago, CNN reports. The agency plans to transfer at least 20 agents to the city, who will form a new task force—on internal documents referred to as “Chicago Crime Guns Strike Force.”

The agency plans to curb the city’s notoriously bad gun violence. Officials told CNN that the increase has been long-planned and isn’t related to President Trump’s tweet last week. (“If Chicago doesn’t fix the horrible ‘carnage’ going on … I will send in the feds,” he wrote.) “ATF is exploring various options as we are committed to furthering law enforcement efforts in Chicago,” a spokesperson said. “One of those options is to send additional agents to Chicago on permanent transfers. ATF is still early in the process of developing strategies and will be prepared to discuss these options further once plans are finalized.” Read more at CNN.
