The shiur, on ParshasToldos, was delivered to Rav Reisman’s alumni over the telephone. Rav Reisman makes a strong effort to keep in touch with all his talmidim even after they have left the yeshiva. About last week’s question, regarding the Issur to daven in an open field, although we find Yitzchok “la’ssuach ba’sodeh”.
This bothered me for a long time & the answer goes this way:
In the time before Anshei Knesses Hagedola the davenen was based on an individual inspiration and personal needs. This could come about in different ways, among them by being impressed by the Gadlus Haboire seen in the universe.
Therefore looking at the expanse of a field or the sky was not only permissible, it even was preferred.
From the time of Anshei Knesses Hagedola the Tefillos were regimented. Any Kavonos have to come from their words composed with Ruach Hakodesh, and not anymore from the individual direct experience of the Mispallel.
