Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia are set to begin a trial on a new plane tracking method nearly a year after Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished with 239 people on board, Australia’s transport minister said Sunday.
Government-owned agency Airservices Australia will coordinate with Malaysia and Indonesia to pilot a new method that tracks planes every 15 minutes instead of the typical 30 to 40 minutes. Should a plane shift off its flight pattern, the monitoring system jumps to tracking it every five minutes or less, according to Australian Transport Minister Warren Truss.
The system will rely on the satellite-based positioning technology available on most long-haul airplanes that relates the aircraft’s current position and next two planned locations. Read more at the BBC.
