The head of Australia’s Catholic Church apologized for what Jewish leaders described as “deeply problematical” comments he made about Jews during a public debate.

Cardinal George Pell said during a debate with renowned British atheist Richard Dawkins aired April 10 on “Q&A,” a highly regarded current affairs talk show aired on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, that Germans suffered more than Jews during the Holocaust.

Asked why God allowed the Holocaust to occur, Pell said: “He helped probably through secondary causes for the Jews to escape and continue. It is interesting through these secondary causes probably no people in history have been punished the way the Germans were. It is a terrible mystery.”

When challenged by the moderator that the Jews had suffered more, Pell said: “Yes, that might be right. Certainly the suffering in both, I mean the Jews, there was no reason why they should suffer.”

In his statement, Pell said the Holocaust was “a crime unique in history for the death and suffering it caused and its diabolical attempt to wipe out an entire people.”

Earlier in the debate Pell said “the little Jewish people” were shepherds who were morally and intellectually inferior to the ancient Egyptians.

In his clarifying statement, Pell said: “My commitment to friendship with the Jewish community, and my esteem for the Jewish faith is a matter of public record, and the last thing I would want to do is give offense to either.”

Peter Wertheim, executive director of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, said the council had expressed “serious concern” about some of Pell’s “deeply problematical” comments.

Wertheim added: “We welcome as a first step Cardinal Pell’s clarifying statement that he did not intend any offense, and his expression of continuing friendship with the Jewish community and esteem for the Jewish faith.”

  1. Well, that explains why people are atheists. This idiot couldn’t debate his way out of a paper bag, making up what he wants to as he goes along.

Our mesora teaches us that Avrohom taught the Egyptians mathematics and astronomy. Our Torah which even these fools know is true tell us how the Plishtim asked to make a treaty with Avrohom and Yitzchok. As far as morally inferior to Egyptians, exactly which morals is he referring to? Egyptians marrying their sisters, having multiple husbands? Or is it the idolatry and enslaveing their neighbors? Oh, I know, they just threw the boys in the water instead of having pogroms like the people this guy looks up to.

    Glad he’s our ‘friend’.

  2. yeah some of my best friends…..bchol dor vador ..you need no further proof…this guy is unaware of his bigotry that is the starkest issue here.

  3. ‘Friendship’ like his, who needs enemies? “Eisav soneh Yaakov”. As simple as that. It’s the kinah and the sinah!

  4. We fall for apologies again…….
Now lets hear Obamination apologize for his relationship with Wright.. and see how many will fawn over it and vote him back in.

  5. Pell made a very foolish remark. It is not the first time he has done so, but as Jewish leaders in Australia said, the Catholic Church there has a good relationship with Jewish people.

  6. The biggest reason people are atheists (commenter number 2) is that The christian and islamic religion are so godless that noone would believe that G-d existed after seeing the accomplishments and horseshow of the infidelity and inhumanity that exists in the name of the god that they claim to represent.
The reason people do not see G-ds nature in Jews is for the reason that G-d allows suffering and that G-d is not clearly in the newspapers as a source of new information that people think they want from somewhere else. Thus G-d does not exist to these people and the meer threat of a man like me or you being a jew and loving the very representation of the evils of the other people represents a cry that they have against any G-d fearing people.
