  1. Tractate Shabbath 139a

a clear halachah or a clear Mishnah in any place.
It was taught. R. Jose b. Elisha said: If you see a generation overwhelmed by many troubles, go forth and examine the judges of Israel, for all retribution that comes to the world comes only on account of the Judges of Israel, as it is said, Hear this, I pray you ye heads of the house of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity. They build up Zion with blood and Jerusalem with iniquity. The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money; yet will they lean upon the Lord, etc. They are wicked, but they place their confidence in Him Who decreed, and the world came into existence. Therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, will bring three punishments upon them answering to the three sins which they cultivate, as it is said, Therefore shall Zion for your sake be ploughed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest. And the Holy One, blessed be He, will not cause His Divine presence to rest upon Israel until the wicked judges and officers cease out of Israel, for it is said, And I will turn my hand upon thee, and thoroughly purge away thy dross, and will take away all thy tin. And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning, etc.

  2. It is clear that entrance to Har Habayis bzman Hazeh, is forbidden to all Jews because of our state of ritual impurity. The consensus of poskim are quite clear on that as indeed, the Badatz point out in their letter.

What confuses the issue is adding the introduction of the quote by Rav Sohnnenfeld that ‘ .. under no circumstances do the Jews wish to seize property which does not belong to them, and certainly not to impinge on the rights of the residents over the property that they might possess. Specifically, there is absolutely no basis to the rumor that the Jews wish to conquer Har Habayis. On the coronary, since the destruction of the Temple is is forbidden for any Jew to set foot on the site of the Har Habayis…..until the coming of the Messiah …. who will restore us to our appropriate level of ritual purity in accordance with the laws of the Torah.”

Rav Sohnnemfeld’s point was not that the Jews have no desire to have then Beis Hamikdosh restored to us, but rather that we have no way to accomplish this feat, save by divine intervention after the final redemption. This was meant to dissuade the Arab populace that they might ever be displaced from the Temple Mount, for since they attach no credulity to the notion of the final redemption of the Jews, they can rest assured that Har Habayis will remain their possession forever.

Presently this point is rather moot. The Arabs are not apprehensive about the immanent seizure of Har Habayis; they know this will not happen. What arouse their ire is the very thought that the Jews aspire and hope for the restoration of the Holy Temple and the Divine service, may it happen swiftly in our times. To suggest, as the Badatz does in their current proclamation that those who tread on the sacred site are inciting the Arabs to murder and mayhem is disingenuous. The Arabs are just as similarity provoked by our thrice daily plea for the return of the Divine Service to the Hashem’s Holy Abode.

In the future, it would behoove them to stick to the issue. It is forbidden for a Jew to set foot on Har Haybis until the Geulah, period.

  3. Arabs have over a thousand year history of killing out our entire communities, kidnapping our children, stealing our property long before the political movement of Zionism. Arabs are provoked by our existence alone. Any appeasement will only make us look weaker in their eyes, which will actually provoke them to spill even more Jewish blood. We have a chiuv to save Idishe lives, even to mechalel shabos if necessary. Even if one learns that it is osur to stand strong in our days, for sakonas nefoshos we must do whatever is necessary. Talk softly and carry a big stick – that is what makes Arab brutes to desire peace. Submit in one thing, and they’ll only demand more and more, until there is no more of you left.
