Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told the IDF’s National Security College, “I am well aware of the difficulties involved in thwarting Iran’s attempts to acquire a nuclear weapon. However, it is clear to me that without a doubt, dealing with the threat itself will be far more complicated, far more dangerous and far more costly in resources and human life.”
Barak’s comments indicating that Israel might attack Iran if sanctions fail to rein in Tehran’s nuclear program came after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all Iranian state decisions, remarked on Wednesday:”They (the West) explicitly say they need to increase pressures, tighten sanctions to force Iranian authorities to reconsider their calculations, but a look at the facts leads us not only to avoid reconsidering our calculations, but to move on our intended path with greater confidence.”

Correct !
But talks and meetings must have a focus and intention. Vision, courage and trust building is required now at the highest levels. A vacuum of these qualities at the top will lead to stagnation at best and chaos and violence at worst on the ground. The lines of cimmunication that are now open are extremely important. There are a number of scenarios that can play out in the coming hours and days. Some are more to G-d’s liking than others…
And in 1973, the top IDF staff was absolutely certain that Egypt would not go to war until they had obtained certain weapons, which they wouldn’t have for several more years. We were assured that no war was in sight. Until the sirens went off on Yom Kippur and I looked out my window to see guys in talleisim hanging onto the sides of jeeps as they dashed for mobilization.

Israel keeps its obligations under international law, specifically UN resolution 242. In contrast, Iran, which signed the Nuclear Non-proliferation treaty in 1968, continues to fail at its obligations under international law. So what do the talking heads do? Keep on talking. Which gets us where?
