facebook1010 WINS New York reports: Students at a Jewish high school for girls in Brooklyn have been ordered to delete their Facebook profiles for allegedly violating school policy.

Beis Rivkah High School president Benzion Stock said students signed a contract and knew they weren’t supposed to be on the social networking site.

“In religious communities they don’t want anybody to have the Internet, especially not Facebook,” Stock told 1010 WINS. “They all knew about it before, they were warned about it, they were told about it, they were taught about it and some girls ignored it.”
The ban has apparently been in effect for two years.

Stock said having a Facebook account violates a religious code of modesty.

“It’s not a modest thing for a religious Jewish man or woman to be on,” Stock said.

According to CrownHeights.info, students in the 11th grade with Facebook accounts were taken out of class and told to delete their accounts and pay a $100 fine or face expulsion.

  1. I’m impressed. Kudos to you, Bais Rivkah, for following through. Do the girls understand — I mean REALLY understand — the “immodest” issues of being on Facebook? What about the dangers, etc.? More importantly, do they care about the penalty?

  2. Whats the big deal? They are simply following the teachings of the Gedolei HaDor Shlita. Why is it big news when a Frum institution goes by the Torah?

  3. In order to be on Facebook first you must have Internet connection. Second must have a reachable computer. Third must have permission so at home or outside doing so. Questions is how the parents allow it to go on level 3. The answer is to close all gaps and give them subtitude to fill this gap.

  4. commonsense, adults can take that chance if they want. There are also a lot of people who need to do it for business. But it is a very reasonable rule for a high school.

WRONG – all one needs is a smartphone, which most teenagers have nowadays.
