Interior Minister Aryeh Deri of Shas instructed that foreign yeshiva students are to receive student visas valid for five years. Presently, they need to renew visas every two years.

Deri also ordered that women from abroad married to Israeli or foreign yeshiva students were to receive A-1 (temporary residency) status and full social benefits. Until now, this rule only applied to wives of students studying in secular institutions.

“This is an important amendment,” Deri said. “I am happy to make things easier for Torah students coming to study Torah in Israel and not bother them to come and bring in documents every two years. It’s also important for the foreign wives of yeshiva students to be able to live in Israel with social benefits like everyone else.”
