New Jersey’s highway safety agency says police have issued nearly 10,000 tickets a month in the two years since the state banned motorists from texting or using hand-held cell phones while driving.
The Division of Highway Traffic Safety released the data Wednesday as part of a campaign to discourage cell phone use while driving.
Nearly 225,000 cell phone law tickets have been issued statewide since March 2008.
The National Safety Council says at least 1.4 million crashes nationwide each year are caused by drivers talking on cell phones, while a minimum of 200,000 crashes are caused by drivers texting.
In the last two years in New Jersey, there have been more than 3,600 crashes involving drivers using a handheld phone, resulting in 13 deaths.
