Democratic members of Congress have drafted legislation to protect from deportation undocumented immigrants who aided in Sept. 11, 2001, rescue and cleanup efforts. A bill to be introduced this week would grant green cards to any undocumented immigrants who volunteered to help in the wake of the terrorist attacks. Rep. Joseph Crowley, representing New York’s 14th District, said Sunday the bill could affect up to 2,000 undocumented immigrants.

“They served our country when we needed a hand, and now we are only showing them, unfortunately, the back of ours,” Crowley said at a news conference. “Instead of gratitude, they are being shown the door,” he said, The New York Timesreported. The legislation—which comes as President Trump seeks to crack down on undocumented immigrants—has no support from Republicans in Congress, he said. Read more at THE NEW YORK TIMES.
