New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said it was “very inappropriate” for police to turn their back on Mayor de Blasio as he eulogized a slain officer yesterday, but acknowledged the public rebuke is “reflective” of tensions between police and the mayor.

“That funeral was held to honor Officer (Rafael) Ramos,” Bratton said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “To bring politics or to bring issues into that event I think was very inappropriate and I do not support it.

“… At the same time it is reflective, unfortunately, of the feelings of some of our officers.”

He later said, “…There’s no denying that among the black community that there are those concerns and in policing sometimes it’s difficult to see those.”

The acrimony in New York is the “tip of the iceberg” and reflective of issues much larger than policing, such as income disparities and unemployment, Bratton said. The tensions are similar to the turbulent times of the 1970s. “We’ll make it here, but it will be difficult,” Bratton said on “Meet the Press.” Read more here.

  1. Hey Commish,
They’re in pain, grieving for a comrade and worried that this administration is for the dogs. You and I know that this is not far from reality.
They’re in the streets and you’re in a plush office! You don’t have to come face to face with a knife-wielding miscreant worried that you’ll sit in jail if you make a decision that doesn’t sit well with the masses. You can’t pass judgment.
Yes it is unprofessional of them but they’re grieving, in pain and worried for their lives and future!
You’re in and out in a year or so!
Commish, I like you but this is where you ought stand up for the officers on the beat!
