British MP Says Israel is ‘Cause of Terrorism’

israel-swat-team-policeA controversial British politician has accused Israel of being the “cause of terrorism” and has said that the West’s treatment of Muslims was caused by what she called “Holocaust guilt” and the “power of the pro-Israel lobby.”

According to a report published in the European Jewish Press website, Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Jenny Tonge made the comments in the British House of Lords on Friday during the Strategic Defence and Security Review, which defines how the British government is to handle the priorities identified in its national security strategy.

“The treatment of Palestinians by Israel is held up as an example of how the West treats Muslims and is at the root cause of terrorism worldwide,” said Tonge. “Even Tony Blair has now admitted this publicly. Why do we let it continue? Is it Holocaust guilt? We should be guilty — of course we should. Is it the power of the pro-Israel lobby here and in the USA? I do not know.”

Tonge also said that she feels “sorry for the people of Israel”, since as she put it “their government’s policies have made that country the cause of a lot of the world’s problems, yet now they are seen as the remedy and the base for the West to fight back.”

This is not the first time that Tonge has made statements against Israel. In 2004, she said that she would consider becoming a suicide bomber if she were an Arab living in the Palestinian Authority. She originally made the remarks before a pro-Palestinian group, but later told Sky News that she stands by her words. “I think if I had to live in that situation — and I say that advisedly — I might just consider becoming one [a suicide terrorist] myself,” she said.

In 2006 Tonge said that “the pro-Israeli lobby has got its grips on the western world, its financial grips. I think they’ve probably got a grip on our party.”

This past February, Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg sacked Tonge from her position as the party’s spokeswoman on health after she suggested that an inquiry should be established regarding the accuracy of allegations of organ harvesting by IDF medical teams at the scene of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Clegg said the comments were “wrong, distasteful and provocative” before dismissing her from her post.

In response to her latest anti-Israel comments, Jon Benjamin, head of the Board of Deputies of British Jews (BOD), was quoted in European Jewish Press as saying: “Baroness Tonge has once again used language that has crossed every red line that her party colleagues have tried to lay down for her.”

The Jewish Chronicle reported on Tonge’s latest remarks and noted that they came only two days after Clegg admitted that Israel’s voice had not been well enough represented within the party.

During a conversation with the Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel, Clegg had said: “Israel’s right to thrive in peace and security is non-negotiable for Liberal Democrats. No other country so continually has its right to exist called into question as does Israel, and that is intolerable.”

  1. Unfortunately, she is right. The Gedolim said this long ago, that Israel’s actions will endanger all Jews worldwide. Jews are supposed to be low-key and not entangled in international controversy. There is enough antisemitism in the world, we do not need to throw gas on the fire. What we can do in such a terrible situation when Israel puts all Jews in danger is a great question. Hashem yerachem aleinu. We need His miracles now more than ever.

  2. I seem to remember there being a Muslim devision in the German army during WW2. Was that because of Israel.
Or how about the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, signing a pact with Germany allowing them to come take the Jews living in Palestine at that time. Also definitely Israel’s fault.

  3. totally false. We were persecuted up and down throughout history much more so than the Palestinians yet we didn’t resort to terrorism. What his message boils down to is “Blame everything on the Jews. The Muslims are the victims here.” Actually, to be more precise, what she is really saying is that there’s no such thing as anti-Semitism at least among Palestinians if not the entire Muslim world. Maybe she forgets that Muslim governments have terrorized Jews stretching back long before the establishment of Israel. Does she not think Israel has a right to self-defense like any other state? Does she suggest Israel simply abandon all its security measures without any guarantee that the other side will reciprocate? I am certain that any such naive attempt at the latter would result in just as much terrorism if not more. If she’s willing to consider how it must feel for a Palestinian to be in the sight of Israeli fire then she must also be willing to consider how it feels for an Israeli to be at constant risk from terrorism. If her family was a victim of terrorism, would she still remain so pacifistic? Face it, Baroness Tonge. The terrorism we see is just a physical manifestation of a deeply rooted, historical phenomenon known as anti-Semitism. It did not simply arrive spontaneously with the creation of Israel. Another point: Israel’s relationship with the West is hardly a product of “Holocaust guilt”. Did it not occur to her that Israel is the most democratic country in the region and that an alliance between democracies is even stronger than an alliance between the US and Saudi Arabia? In the first place though, Western support for Israel’s establishment came ideologically from the moral imperative to recognize the Jewish people’s right to self-determination that is recognized in the UN charter. The context here is critical. Israel only came about through the UN’s willingness to enforce the points in its charter first and foremost with the memory of the Holocaust only a secondary issue. All of her comments are typical of the uneducated, morally blind, and heavily biased propaganda from pro-Palestinian advocates. Note that she also goes into a conspiracist mode when mentioning the pro-Israel lobby (highly typical).

  4. #1: Jews weren’t doing anything to offend the goyim and yet we had the Holocaust. Israel was inevitable and necessary. I think it’s not our own actions that endanger us the most but the actions of the goyim. Israel is not only worth defending but it is necessary to do so. Despite what anti-Zionists say, anti-Zionism is bound up with anti-Semitism and it is much harder to disentangle the two than one might think. However, I will wholeheartedly agree with the last two sentences you wrote!

  5. #2,

The Muslim division in WWII was not because of Israel which did not exist but it was because of the Zionists who already secured a promise form Lord Balfour to give the Zionists the land. The Mufti also assisted Hitler because of the threat of the Zionists taking over his land. Read Reb Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld’s bio or Reb MB Weismandel’s published letters.
