Brooklyn Teen Running for Borough Park Council Seat

tischlerThe NY Daily News reports: A Brooklyn teen is hoping to become the City Council’s youngest member ever – but the adults are fighting tooth and nail to keep him off the ballot. Abraham Tischler, 18, is running for the Borough Park Council seat left vacant when Simcha Felder took a job with city Controller John Liu.

His platform is teen friendly – he wants to save free student MetroCards; but he also is vowing to fight to keep city firehouses open and crack down on bogus parking tickets.

The Touro College sophomore says his inexperience is actually a plus. So far, he has spent just $560 – for posters and flyers.

“I owe no one favors,” he said.

Still, at least one of the adults running against him in the 44th Council District worried enough to take him to court.

David Greenfield, 31, the executive vice president of the Sephardic Community Federation, is suing Tischler and says the teen’s petitions have forged and duplicated signatures.

Tischler insists there is nothing wrong with his petitions.

After all, his mom and dad helped him gather the 1,415 signatures he eventually submitted – nearly double the required 765. Anything that looked fishy, Tischler said, was tossed.

“They wouldn’t knock me off if they didn’t think I was a real challenge,” Tischler said. “Let the people decide who they want to be their councilman.”

Greenfield, a former chief of staff for Assemblyman Dov Hikind, has Mayor Bloomberg’s backing and is one of the frontrunners. So is longtime community board lead Joe Lazar, who has Public Advocate Bill de Blasio’s backing. But it’s Greenfield, who has raised $131,000 for the race, who is pressing a lawsuit.

“We don’t know anything about the guy,” said his spokesman, Eric Kuo. The campaign is also concerned, he said, because Tischler isn’t participating in the city campaign financing system.

“He could drop half a million dollars of family money in the campaign tomorrow,” Kuo said.

Ridiculous, said the teen’s dad, who has capped spending for his son’s campaign at $1,000.

“David Greenfield, with all his money, with all his power, is trying to get an 18-year-old kid off the ballot because he’s scared,” said Harold Tischler, 46, a construction contractor.

“Give him a shot.”

  1. There is no way Tischler is staying on the ballot now. Greenfield’s got Boss Lopez in his pocket and everyone knows who controls the judges in Brooklyn. I kind of feel bad about that because I’m not sure who is going to save the firehouses now 🙂

  2. not sure how he will do, but its an interesting twist to what some of our 18 yr olds are doing now.

  3. man, the daily news reported this??? This fine young man has no chance but KOl Hakavod for him. Why put him down????????

  4. This is the same way our dictator Obama came to power. When he ran for the Senate seat in Illinois he sued and sued and sued all candidates against him. This shows what type of person Mr. Greenfield is.

Let the kid stay in the race.

  5. Hey David we know its you posting under the name “lakewood yungerman”& other alias w same comments elswhere. Wake up you’ve lost this on. If you want a chance in the future act like a gentelmen.

  6. Is this for real?! I don’t mean to put him down and admire his ambitiousness (especially when it comes to matters such as MetroCards) but come on, sometimes we have to think about what’s good for us as a whole. Why would we want a teenager, with almost no life experience (forget about political experience) as a member of our City Council?

I take offense at you saying Bobov has endorsed Greenfield. It is an out and out lie. 45th Street has publicly endorsed Lazar. 48th street has endorsed no one. On top of that you seem to forget that the Agudah is backing Lazar. With them comes the Yeshivish/litvish crowd.

  8. What I heard as that Lazar asked the Board of Elections to verify the count, a routine check. Greenfield filed a lawsuit. I think Matzav should investigate and find out the facts unlike the other two biased web sites.

  9. Tonight is Dovid Egert’s CHASSUNAH in Lakewood!! Now that he’s gonna be hitched, he can run for Township Committee for real!!!

  10. Greenfield was the “ONLY” one that “SUED” Tischler but he’s trying his usual spin that Joe also. Also what David?

  11. To # 10:

It appears that you do not have any children in the litvishe yeshivos.

My sons, from two differnt yeshivos, came home with letters saying that it is a chiyuv to vote for Dovid Greenfield and that he has actually brought money directly to the yeshivos. There was a sign hanging in my shule, signed by my Rov saying the same thing.

The “raid” is that the aguda is only “appearing” to support the hikind/lazar team, because he has threatened them with no more funding.

There are also signs up all over boro park, with a “mechaah” against DH as a mevaze rabonim and yeshivos on his show regarding the “molestation ” issue. He also many many times criticized the AGUDA and the MOETZES rergarding its stance on the Markey Bill.

Only seceral chasidishe groups have signed with hikind/ lazar. (dehainu belz and ger); and thats because they’ve been promised big money for their POWER BROKERS (machers blaz)

Bkitzur, oilam hatoira and many chasidishe groups want an end to the bizayon talmidei chachomim and yeshivos on hikind’s radio show. They want him OUT.

Ask around and you will see for yourself.

  12. David Greenfield BIG mistake, the hock in BP is that all the yeshiva guys (I am one of em’) are going to vote for Lazar in protest of your lawsuit against Tischler, even those of us who had no say in the matter until now!

  13. Lazar’s campaign manager is Gary TILZER!! #17 Dont try to make trouble!

  14. #23: The raid is the same in TV! The whole Oilam is voting for R’ Joe in protest. P.S. I have & is one of the only news sites I have access to, so I’m not Stam surfing.

  15. Jonathan Judge is the way to go. Not associated with Vito Lopez or the Democratic machine politics. He is the only lifelong resident of the District. Also, he is the only one who promised at the Jewish Press debate that he wont raise taxes.

    Go JUDGE Go!!

If it’s true name your yeshiva and shul. I spoke to someone in the Agudah I am very close with and he insisted that we vote for Lazar. He says the other guy is very dangerous. People don’t believe the lies being spread here. Verify everything!

  17. The truth is greenfield did the right move any seasoned politician would do, and lazar being seasoned himself let greenfield do the dirty work for him.
