A law that would require Bedouin camel owners to register their camels and insert subcutaneous identification chips in them passed its first Knesset reading before Yom Tov. This was the culmination of a two-year battle fought by the Regev legal organization and MK Bazalel Smotrich to stop camels wandering onto Negev roads, where they cause tragic accidents.

Over the past decade, 15 people died in accidents involving animals and 350 were hurt, 50 seriously. Police admitted that they receive a thousand complaints of camels wandering on Negev roads every year.

“The sooner the legislative process is completed, the sooner lives will be saved,” a Regavim spokesman said.
