British Prime Minister David Cameron met with Queen Elizabeth II on Friday afternoon, who asked him to form her next government, after his Conservative Party defied all pollsters’ predictions to win a shock overall majority in the U.K. general election.

The Scottish National Party wiped out Labour and the Liberal Democrats in Scotland, surging from six seats to 56 seats. Opposition Labour leader Ed Miliband managed to keep his seat, but called the election a “very disappointing and difficult night” for Labour and announced his resignation as party leader.

The Liberal Democrats-who were part of the last coalition government-were almost wiped out, retaining just eight of their 57 seats nationwide. After holding on to his seat in Witney,

Cameron called it a “strong night for the Conservative Party,” and a “positive response to a positive campaign.”
