carsBackseat driving has nothing on this. The U.S. Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved a plan to ensure cars will talk to each other in the future as part of an effort to prevent accidents.

According to the plan, vehicle-to-vehicle (v2v) systems would have to be installed in all cars and light vehicles, to communicate location, direction, and speed at as much as 10 times per second to surrounding cars. The V2V systems would let a driver know when there’s a risk of collision and even automatically slow the car down in some cases.

“V2V has the potential to help drivers avoid 70 to 80 percent of crashes that involve unimpaired drivers,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said. “The potential of this technology is absolutely enormous.” Read more at Wired.

  1. I wonder if this will also turn out to be an invasion of privacy, whereby every single car can be tracked as to exactly where it was at a certain time, and at what speed it was driving…

Chalk one up for Big Brother.

  2. The logical extension of this is autonomous driving, which has been researched for decades, and is about 15 years away.

  3. All technology is a mashal for Hashem’s heshgacha as the Chafetz Chaim said about recorders. Hashem makes every movement of every car. Every safe trip, every accident , near miss and red light it’s all part of His master plan.
