rav-ovadiah-yosefChacham Ovadia Yosef will be undergoing surgery this afternoon at http://matzav.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gifHadassah Ein Karem Hospital, where he was taken to yesterday to be examined by physicians in light of debilitating back pain he has been experiencing.

It is about three weeks since Chacham Ovadia slipped in his house at 45 Rechov Hakablan in Har Nof, Yerushalayim, after which he began suffering from severe pain.http://matzav.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif Due to the age of the 92-year-old gaon, it is not 100% clear yet if general anesthesia or local anesthesia will be used for the back surgery, but the physicians, according to sources, are leaning towards general anesthesia.

An internationally recognized expert, sources say, has been brought to Israel for the surgery due to the complications of the condition and the age of Chacham Ovadiah, who was diagnosed last week as suffering from a fracture in his lower vertebrae.

After witnessing some improvement during his hospitalization last week following some tests and X-rays, doctors hoped surgery wouldn’t be necessary, but his turn for the worse has necessitated today’s operation.

The surgery is scheduled for about 1 p.m. local time at Hadassah Ein Kerem.

All are asked to daven for Rav Ovadiah ben Georgia l’refuah shleimah.

  1. According to a Rav in our city who is a talmid of HaRav Ovadia Yosef, the correct name is HaRav Ovadia Yosef ben Gor’jia. The G is hard as in the word Go. The Rav is very close with HaRav Ovadia Yosef and this is definitely the correct name.

  2. I heard it from his son this shabbos: HaRav Ovadia Yosef ben Gorjiya – his made his second name, yosef, his official last name.

  3. Gorjia with a hard “g” (as in “go”) doesn’t make sense. If his mother’s name was a Hebrew name then there would be no “j.” The fact that there is a “j” seems to indicate that her name was an Arabic name (the Arabic gimmel is pronounded with a “j”). If that is so, it could not contain a hard “g” (as Arabic has only a “j” not a “g”), and the name should be “Jorja” (or Georgia, as in the American State).

Either way, it doesn’t really matter; just pile on the merits for the Rav’s refuah sheleimah, God know who to apply them for.

  4. We should pray for harav hagaon morenu vrabbeinu posek hador harav chaim ovadia ben Gor’gia.
Dear mr tide, you don’t know what you are saying bec there is a j In Hebrew if you have proper havara (prounounciation) which is the Yemenite havara. My friend is Yemenite and he showed that it says the only two letters in Hebrew that are supposed to sound the same are sin and samech otherwise no two letters sound the same. The j sound comes from a gimmel with a dagesh (dot in the letter). Further did you know the chazon ish used to say shema like a Yemenite bec you’re chaiv to pronounce everey letter correctly otherwise you’re not yotze. (I don’t actually do that bec I think that’s a bit extreme figuring I have a minhag). Anyway I don’t mean to start a fight rather i just mean to correct you. A gut yom tov!
