A chareidi couple from Yerushalayim won a lottery for 12.5 million shekels – the equivalent of about $3,375,000 – yesterday.

The husband and wife, parents of six children who don’t usually buy lottery tickets, were merely hoping to pay off an electric bill of about 4,000 shekels – approximately $1,100 – for which they had no ,money.

“We didn’t know what to do,” the husband said. “We’ve incurred many expenses and simply did not have the funds. Then we had this idea to buy a lottery ticket. It was only the third time that I have purchased such a ticket. Bechasdei Hashem, we emerged victorious. It’s unbelievable.”

After paying up his bills, Kol Haolam reports that the man wishes to visit kivrei tzaddikim, including the kever of Rav Nachman of Breslov in Uman.

      • Because they just won a ton of money and I’m being threatened by my daughters Yeshiva because I fell behind in tuition payments because there is no practical way for me to pay. This would be a great opportunity for them to help Yiddisheh tuchter stay in a yeshiva, where they belong, instead of being kicked out and being forced to go to public school where they would immediately go off the derech and be lost to Yiddishkeit r”l! That’s why. Now do you understand?

        • You realise that they are Israeli? They would or should give to Israeli charities first! If the school is willing to throw out because oflate tution payments maybe its time to reevaluate what kind of chinuch the institution would be responible for if thats what actions they would take.

          • That’s funny. So you’re saying that when Israeli mishulachim come from ISRAEL to AMERICA to collect, we should tell them to go fly a kite because we have to support only American Tziddakos? Who cares where the gvir lives or where the nitzrach lives? No sheichus. Just excuses.

  1. In my opinion this piece of news is a terrible thing to publicize.
Now we will have thousands of poor people spending their hard earned or hard collected money to buy lotteries and get addicted.
And addictive it is in a big way. Just go to any poor area and see what goes on there at the lotto selling counters.
    Again.
    HOW COULD YOU???

  2. to “How could you post this?” – Get a grip on yourself. People should just feel happy for them – period! HKB’H gave them parnassah B’revach. Why would people get addicted to gambling hearing this news? There are stories every day of people winning the lottery. Seriously. bad overreaction…

Local institutions should come first generally! Or atleast in general they did historically. A local tzeddaka should be higher on the list before one in a different jurisdiction. Just like giving tzedakka should be given first to relatives before giving to any random checklist of tzeddakas.
