idf-draftThe chareidi world can thank Yair Lapid, Naftali Bennet, Dov Lipman, or any number of people. But it is happening. And it will only get worse.

The Knesset Committee for Promoting “Equal Share of the Burden,” headed by Science Minister Yaakov Perry of Yesh Atid, met for the first time on Sunday along with reps of the IDF and the Civil Service Administration, who said they are prepared to take in charedi enlistees.

At the end of the meeting, Perry remarked that “In six weeks we will have a historic law – the process is sensitive, but the IDF’s needs are our first priority.”

Brigadier-General Gadi Agmon, head of planning in the IDF’s Personnel Directorate, presented before the committee the up-to-date situation of chareidi enlistment.. He said that the IDF is ready to take in additional charedi forces in light of “the Army’s growing needs.” He did say that such a process will take place gradually, making sure the troops were designated to special positions that “damage neither their way of life nor the IDF’s social fabric.”

Shar-Gerby Shalom, who is the head of the Civil Service Administration, presented civil service enlistment rates, adding that the number of charedim joining National Service has grown since the end of the Tal Law.

Next week the committee will begin working on the formulation of the law and its articles. As part of this process, they will tour IDF bases which already include charedi soldiers.

“We are ready to receive thousands of enlistees,” said Internal Security Minister Yitzchok Aharonovitch of Yisrael Beiteinu. “Their contribution will nbe in a diverse number of roles suited for the unique qualities of the group joining the service while taking into account their needs.”

  1. #1,
I’ll just guess your an american Jew who knows nothing about what the state’s budget looks like, and just says “privileged characters” because that’s what you heard on the media, right?

  2. “The chareidi world can thank Yair Lapid, Naftali Bennet, Dov Lipman, or any number of people. But it is happening. And it will only get worse”
What do you mean worse- this is a good thing – Chareidim should share the responsibility of defending the land- they are not privileged characters, nor are the modern orthodox or secular less or lower humans. Hashem should watch over and protect Tz”hal

  3. “The chareidi world can thank Yair Lapid, Naftali Bennet, Dov Lipman, or any number of people.”

What about Hashem. The first of Rambam’s 13 principles is that Hashem does EVERYTHING.

    This is from Hashem.

  4. commonsense your statement is exactly the problem you state the charadim should share in the burden of defending the land limud hatorah is the most powerful defense there is it is kol kol yakov that protects us (see gemora sotah torah magen etc)hashem yerachem

  5. To commenter # 1-

I’m not sure what common sense u have. But my common sense tells me that if Hashem needs to protect the tzahal, he can protect us without the help of tzahal. Btw, you’re not the first with this perverted calculation, there were times that the Jewish nation was worshipping idols, to help in the places that Hashem was “unable” to help.

  6. The Torah was given before entering because it is supreme to E”Y. E”Y is like a lulav or matzah a vehicle to do mitzvos.
    Yisrael VeOiraiso VKBH Chad Hu!
Learning Torah is not something relegated to Kitzur between mincha and mariv or perhaps a Daf Yomi. If we understand as the gedolim do that Torah is our lifeblood then we wouldn`t consider bnei torah second class. The yeshivos should leave and move abroad.

  8. Commonsense,
    You are narrowminded.
If what you say is correct, then the Modern Orthodox and Secular should share an equal burdon in the Ruchnius aspect of protecting Israel, and share in the Limud Hatorah, which is equally or more important to the safety of Eretz Yisroel.

And if you will answer, “Well, that is just unreasonable to ask the Secular to join Yeshivos, and to sit and learn,” then why isn’t it equally unreasonable to have Chareidim share the physical aspect.

Life is a two-way street, and you wish to force one sect to comprimise and change their way of life, isn’t it unfair not to ask the other side to change theirs as well?

  9. commonsense- nothing about your name describes you. how dare you say that chareidim should be fighting in an army that causes untold chilul Hashem???

  10. Indeed! HaShem should watch over all Yidden. But, boys who are lomday Torah ought be exempt. Those who are shomray Torah need an army arrangement where their commitment to a Torah life not be compromised or otherwise threatened. The Israeli government and the IDF in particular are not committed to that and their track record ain’t no good either! THAT, I submit, is the real problem. Too many young bochurim – impressionable kids – stand to lose their loyalty to Torah and HaShem. CHAS VESHALOM.

  11. Dear #1, the charedim are sharing the burden of protecting the land, and i will add of protecting am Israel. Their limoud is the main protection !!!
There are so many proofs to this statement but I won’t write a meguila. Just look up in the Thora when we went to war to conquer Israel how many men Moshe
Rabbenu sent to fight and how many stayed to pray and learn.

  12. Tz”hal,
You are only showing your ignorance of the Judaism. It’s not about who is physically
stronger but about who carries the shoulder of all of klal yisroel. What about about the 29% of secular Jews who do not go to the army
if sharing the burden on them as well!!!!!

  13. all the seforim say that torah protects us , why is this so hard to understand. maybe you just don’t want to believe it the same way the world doesn’t want to believe that arabs want to take over the world.

  14. ‘commonsense’, this topic is getting old and really deserves no response to you, but when something hurts us we cry out. It’s difficult to read your words and not wonder:

What does being a Jew mean to you? Dancing the hora on yom ha’atzmaut? singing with the women who breaking the sanctity of the kosel? Or does it mean that we were given a Torah that supports us, unifies us and is the foundation of the world?

If you truly are interested in the Charedim’s responsibilities, you should encourage more of your modern ‘orthodox’ brethren to join the ranks of G-d fearing Jews, to study and understand it the way we were taught and not get caught up in the latest popular method of how to destroy Judaism from within.

Bottom line, the Charedim are the ONLY ones defending the land by following G-d’s instructions. Do you think G-d is JOKING when HE tells us that the land will vomit us out if we don’t listen? The modern orthodox and secular are drawing heavenly wrath which the Charedim must protect you from. Take the Charedim away from their holy work and you are slitting your own throat.

  15. Of course we all believe that it’s not the army that protects us, but rather the Torah learning, but why when it comes to money, we insist on taking money from people who are unhappy to give it to us. Why can’t we apply the same bitachon to financial matters and say that if Hashem wants us to have money, He will somehow give us money. It is the dependency on government money that makes up seem hypocritical.

  16. Do believe that Lapid was put into this powerful position to continue his father’s work – the undoing of Torah in EY. If the whole chareidi community will unite, they will have the power to fight him. Seems that most here still do not have the understanding that this has nothing to do with needing these chareidim in the army, but it is about getting rid of learning Torah and the religious life. However it works out, it will be the will of H’, but leading to a truly religious EY with great Torah learning, because the erev rav will disappear. Once again, we will have the EY such as in the time of Chizkayahu HaMelech, when every man, woman and child were learned in Torah.

  17. At the end of the day we all know its all from HKBH. We have to do our hishtadlus, and in a country surrounded by people who want to kill us this includes defence. The inadvertent result of NOT serving is causing a tremendous rift and challenging the fabric of am yusrael

  18. I never made that post about being set straight.
You people are fools to think you can learn our enemies away. Throughout T”NACh Jews have fought there enemies. They didn’t hide and hope for the better.

  19. The meeting betwen Ben Gurion and the Chazon Ish is well known .

A vacum exists today in appreciation for the value of Torah which has unfortunately plummeted to record lows.

  20. Commonsense:
1: There was a villager who had a fully loaded wagon. He
the horses, but they didn’t move. He started to unload
the wagon until there was nothing left inside, but they
still didn’t move, so he took off the wheels!!! The DUBNO
MAGID says, without ????, the army won’t do anything.

2: When the ???? went to war, it was with the ?? ?? on their lips.
Nowadays, can you say the same????

  21. there have never been more people learning torah
there have never been more yeshivos
the problem isnt yidden learning . the problem is if i am not chareidi my torah is useless.
my observance useless. only full timers count.

nonreligious jews will see that some chareidim are mentchen not just sponges. and once exposed to torah practised with mentchlichkeit will gain an appreciation for yiddishkeit.
everyone wins. the RSO works in mysterious ways.

  22. shomer torah and mitzvos check

  23. we need each other
during our history that was always the case.
in the alte heim we had a lot of torah but no army and no daled amos. It didnt turn out so well.
a little hakoras hatov for the millions of shekel given to chareidim and their causes would go a long way.
stop dumping on yiddishe neshomos that put their lives on the line.
there has never been more torah learning than now. there have never been mnore yeshivos than now. stop fighting yesteryears war.
all jews without exception are better off today than 75 years ago. do youfear the shul will be burned down with you in it do you fear a pogrom or an expulsion
putting the 2 sides together will show the secular the beauty of torah not only the ugly anger they see now . the chareidim will see the humanity and decency of a young jewish boy.who has the love of the land and a passion for his people. even if he doesnt yet know a rashi .
The RSO made the seculars the shiluchim in the rebirth of eretz yisroel and BH that is turning out great
    maybe this is round 2.
