Dozens of chareidi men have studied nursing at the Yerushalayim College of Technology and at Bnei Brak’s Mivchar College with the backing of rabbonim. Five are employed as the first chareidi male nurses to work in Tel Aviv’s secular Ichilov Medical Center. This is Israel’s second largest hospital and one of the most progressive full-service healthcare treatment and research institutions in the country.

“We – Bentzi Porges, Yosef Malka, Avi Kirshberg, Avraham Shimonov and Levi Yitzhak Balashnikov – are all chareidi yeshiva graduates,” the five wrote. “We completed a nursing course and now work here at Ichilov in emergency rooms, trauma centers, operating rooms, neurosurgery, neurology, in Surgery A and other inpatient departments. We are the first chareidi male nurses in the hospital and call to all our friends: Come and join us!”

  1. Wether the article is newsworthy or not I will leave for others, but the use of this picture which seems to be of bnei torah gathered in a beis medrash for a Drosho (maybe a levaya or for a hesped)definitely has nothing to do with nursing and would seem to be inappropriate.

  2. Very strange story. Why were they requesting their friends to come join them? Which Gedolim approved of this? Anonymous? A nursing job for a frum male presents many serious shailas. Especially when they work in close quarters with non religious females.

    • L’hefech – frum men want to be treated by men, not women. Of course the male nurses, and all males, have to be careful around the women nurses, frum and otherwise, and they have to be careful wherever they work, walk in the streets, attend a simcha, shop or get served in an office, etc. Women also have to be careful around men. It’s a part of life. It’s called the yetzer hara. Wily fellow, been around since the dawn of time.

  3. I for one as a chareidi femal would prefer a female nurse working on me..obviously if its a specialist or a doctor or hatzolah im no shoita and i have no choice… i dont run away from them..but a nurse…ill pass.
I hope my sons find professions in fields that theyre not tending to female bodies in the physical sense that nurses do.
I dont think theres anything to glorify here and no i am not anti frum males working at all. Now if they could be male nurses and be guaranteed work in a fully male setting that would be diff..assuming the schooling and the setting of it are appropriate for a frum male. Just my feeling

  4. Very dangerous. The Army or nursing is a terrible environment for charedi. I Expect these oisvorfs to be beaten and ridiculed like chadaks that they are. There life will be full of regret and shame. The Rabbonim who encouraged them to become a nurse, feh on them. They are sell outs to the Furest degrees.

  5. they’re to be commended! everyone needs a parnasa. they’re role in nursing is a huge mitzva to israeli society.

  6. Very dangerous. Chareidi men should not be looking to get jobs unless they get 100 Rabbanim to sign off on it, Even then it should only be bein hasedarim with a personal mashgiach temidi on the hospital floors.

  7. Working as a Doctor, PA, or nurse in private practice, is fine. That applies to both male & female. The big spiritual problem comes, when they work in an emergency room. Usually you’re working late at nights, away from your spouse, in close quarters with members

  9. Nobody says that chareidim, or anyone for that matter shouldnt work. If someone needs a parnassah he should definitely go work. He should obviously make sure that the workplace is appropiate for a ben torah. What I didnt like was them calling for their friends to leave the beis medrash and come join them. If you need to work, go work but dont pull your friend out if he is able to manage.

  10. This nursing education is fraught with danger’s. People have to understand that they need to live their life with Tyra and not with medicine. Who knows where this will lead to people will abandon yeshiva for chesed! Gevald. Nursing home owner is another thing which is gevaldik. You can learn all daze and just right checks. Jump on it.
