Charles Krauthammer: Obama Won With ‘No Mandate’ And ‘Nowhere To Go’

krauthammerLast night following the presidential election results, Dr. Charles Krauthammer jokingly offered to “write prescriptions” for depressed folks along with his discouraging election analysis: “Obama won; but he has no mandate.”

Krauthammer explained to Megyn Kelly that America was “a little bit worse off,” than before because now we were facing four years during which President Obama would slide. In Krauthammer’s opinion, because Republicans retain control of the House, gridlock will continue leaving “Obama nowhere to go.”

“He won by going very small, very negative,” said Krauthammer, speaking on FOX News as throngs of Obama supporters danced in celebration over Obama’s re-election victory. “This is not a mandate either in the numbers or the way he campaigned,” warned Krauthammer, adding, “He did not campaign on any ideas, anything large, anything important.”

In his victory speech, Obama did stress that elections were both “big” and “important.” He said, “Elections matter. It’s not small, it’s big. It’s important.” Speaking of “hope,” with a much narrower margin of victory than that of 2008, Obama fell back on his original campaign theme:

“Tonight, despite all the hardship we’ve been through, despite all the frustrations of Washington, I’ve never been more hopeful about our future. I’ve never been more hopeful about America. And I ask you to sustain that hope. I’m not talking about blind optimism. The kind of hope that just ignores the enormity of the tasks ahead or the road blocks that stand in our path. I’m not talking about the wishful idealism that allows us to just sit on the sidelines or shirk from a fight. I have always believed that hope is that stubborn thing inside of us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us so long as we have the courage to keep reaching to keep working, to keep fighting.”

Holding out a bit of hope for conservatives, Krauthammer pointed to a young, new guard as the next generation of the GOP. Krauthammer predicted that Paul Ryan, Bobby Jindal, Nikki Haley, Marco Rubio, Kelly Ayotte and Ted Cruz were the future of the party. In his opinion, these rising stars were just a year or two short of maturity in their careers now; however, Krauthammer was sure “they will be in the fray next time.”
