Chess Prodigy Kasparov Compares NYC Blizzard And Supermarket Lines To Communist Russia

kasparovNew Yorkers are standing on breadlines as a potentially historic blizzard bears down on the city.

Chess champion Garry Kasparov, who grew up in the U.S.S.R., compared the weather, long lines and bare shelves to his upbringing in the impoverished Communist country.

“The weather here in New York reminds me of Moscow. The lines in the food stores remind me of the USSR!” Kasparov wrote on Twitter early Monday afternoon.

The mad dash to area supermarkets came as a storm expected to dump anywhere from 18-36 inches on the region began moving in.

Pictures on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram showed waits hundreds of people deep at the Whole Foods market in Union Square.

Though usually long, the lines do not usually wrap around the store’s hot and cold food bars and snake all the way to the front door.

People unable, or unwilling, to wait hours to pay for food abandoned their baskets and carts in the middle of aisles like snowed-in cars stranded on Third Avenue during the last major snow storm to hit the city in 2010.

People waiting to get in lined up outside both the Whole Foods and nearby Trader Joe’s markets, both in Union Square. A line could also be seen outside the Park Slope Food Co-Op.

Bare shelves dominated the pictures from other area food markets, including the Gowanus, Brooklyn, Whole Foods and a KeyFood in Astoria, Queens.

Most people finished their food shopping over the weekend after hearing the dire forecasts, but the unlucky masses who put food shopping off until the last minute may well be trudging through nearly a foot of snow by the time they escape their local supermarket.

  1. These empty minded people are Mekatney Emunah! These little children get themselves into a panic as if there won’t be any food available for the next month. Such immature babies. There is no belief in G-d. What a tragic mindset.
