rav-avrohom-solomon-chevronYerushalayim – Thousands participated in the levaya on Friday April 20th of Harav Avrohom Solomon zt”l, the legendary mashgiach of the Chevron Yeshiva Knesses Yisroel. Amongst the maspidim at the Yeshiva campus on Givat Mordechai was Harav Shlomo Palei, mashgiach of the Yeshiva and Harav Mordechai Farbstein, Rosh Yeshiva. He was laid to rest on Har Hamenuchos.

Harav Solomon was a mashgiach for nearly 40 years at the Yeshiva and was a talmud of the saintly Rosh Yeshiva, Harav Yecheskel Sarne zt”l and the indefatigable mashgiach Harav Meir Chodosh zt”l. Born in 1925 in Lomza, Harav Solomon was orphaned at the age of 12. With the family bereft of their head of the mishpacha, it was decided to be oleh to Eretz Yisroel. But his mother and siblings could not get visas to Palestine at that time and only he was permitted to join his grandparents who already had a daughter living there. Despite his longing to return to his mother, she urged him to stay in Eretz Yisroel to learn Torah. Unfortunately, she and his siblings were murdered by the Nazis and the young Avrohom Solomon grew up on his own to become one of the most respected figures in the Torah world. The story is told that on the day of his Bar Mitzvah, he walked over to the gabbai of the shul and asked for an aliyah.

His “derech” was ultimately that of the coveted Slobodka model which stressed the importance of a person’s rising to the maximum potential in Torah and middos. His talmidim were mesmerized by his shmuesen. They would seek out his wise counsel and enjoyed being in his presence. During the last four years of his life, his body was ravaged by a disease that left him totally paralyzed. But by virtue of a computer which translated his eye movements, he was able to communicate with his talmidim, often responding to their questions.

Rav Solomon was part of an elite group of mashgichim that goes back to Rav Nosson Zvi Finkel, known as  “der alter fun Slobodka” and included his Rebbe in mussar, Harav Chodosh who was a talmid of der alter.

The Yeshiva recently appointed Rav Chaim Yitzchok Kaplan, a Rosh Yeshiva of Pachad Yitzchok and a well known Talmud muvhak of Harav Yitzchok Hutner, as a new mashgiach in the Yeshiva. Harav Hutner was a talmid of the Chevron Yeshiva

At 135, Chevron Yeshiva is the oldest Yeshiva.  Founded in Slobodka, Lithuania, the yeshiva, which continued in Chevron and Yerushalayim without interruption, is known throughout the Torah world as “the mother of all yeshivas.” Since its founding, Slobodka/Chevron Yeshiva Knesses Yisroel, produced the foremost leaders of Torah Judaism around the world. More than 1,400 talmidim, some of the brightest young men in Eretz Yisrael and elsewhere, study in the magnificent yeshiva campus in Givat Mordechai, many of which will ultimately emerge as the future leaders of klal yisroel.

  1. there are 3 things that produce gedolim. 1. hard work from the boy and the boy’s rabbayim. 2. yiras shomayim of the boy. 3. siyatah dishmaya.

  2. The Mirrer Yeshiva was founded in 1815.

To my knowledge, closing in on 200 years, this remains the oldest existing yeshiva today.
