In his weekly drashah delivered last night, Sefardic Chief Rabbi of Israel Rav Yitzchok Yosef commented on Israelis’ duty to respond to a terror attack.

“If a terrorist approaches you with a knife,” he said, “it is a good deed to eliminate him. There is no need to fear. If someone comes to kill you, kill him first.”

Rav Yosef added that there is no need to fear that the Israeli Supreme Court or the IDF Chief of Staff will object to the way one responded.

“The moment that a known terrorist comes at you with a knife, not coming back alive will deter them. Therefore, it is a good deed to eliminate them,” he said.

Rav Yosef’s comments appeared to be in response to a comment made last month  The Sephardic Chief Rabbi’s remarks were intended to refute a statement made by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot regarding the Torah dictum of “Hashkeim lehorgecha.” Addressing high school students in Bat Yam, Eizenkot said, “The rules of engagement are based on the particular mission. The IDF cannot run according to the rule of ‘If someone comes to kill you, kill him first.’ The rules of engagement are also based on a value system. There were time when a 13-year-old girl was wielding scissors or knives, and there was a barricade between her and the soldiers. I would not want a soldier to open fire on that girl, but to respond with the force required to fulfill the mission.”

  1. ” The IDF cannot run according to the rule of ‘If someone comes to kill you, kill him first.’”
And then we wonder why there are still daily stabbings after 6 months with no end in sight.

  2. War is not a pony tail on the bride.

This shiurim is obvious, but I would not call it a mitzvah to kill your enemy. It might be a human right.

This might concur more hate in the arab community.

    Tangent Reality.
