rav-amar-rav-metzgerIsrael’s chief rabbis Rav Yona Metzger and Rav Shlomo Amar met with IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz Sunday and asked him to allow religious soldiers to excuse themselves from military events where women are singing.

Last week, as reported here on Matzav.com, four Officers’ Course cadets were decommissioned after leaving a function where women were singing. Gantz told the rabbis he plans to discuss the matter with Chief Army Rabbi Brigadier-General Rafi Peretz.

  1. The IDF is such a vital organ of the state certain philosophies and principles should be adhered to. The overarching philosophy and plan for the Jewish people is the superset to the IDF’s orientation. Philosophy first. Public policy second.

  2. The Supreme Commander-in-chief, the Almighty, supercedes the IDF commanders. His orders are paramount. And He has commanded that a man may not listen to a woman singing. There is absolutely no reason nor benefit to the IDF for religious soldiers to hear a woman singing. And it is also not in the IDF’s best interests to make G-d angry.

  3. The IDF has ensured every participant ‘Religious Freedom”, a mandatory concert of women soloist holds no military necessity for soldiers to attend. Since the religious attendance in the IDF is rising, it is time for the higher-ups to reassess the absurd rules and regulations.

  4. TO: Sheldon,

I’m sorry to bust YOUR bubble!

I’m not going to go into details of halacha, but there is a mitzvas eseh d’oraysa of “loi susir min haderech asher yagidu lichu yumin usmoil”
